Controlled Challenge Studies Confirm Vanguard Efficacy Against 2 Serovars Of Growing Importance—L. grippotyphosa And L. pomona1

Study Design

  • L. grippotyphosa challenge study: 20 vaccinates (10 IM, 10 SC), 10 controls (approximately 6 weeks of age).

  • L. pomona challenge study: 19 vaccinates (10 IM, 9 SC), 20 controls (approximately 6 weeks of age).

  • Vaccinates received two - 1 mL doses 3 weeks apart.

  • All dogs challenged 4 weeks after last vaccination with National Veterinary Services Laboratories isolates of L. grippotyphosa or L. pomona and observed for 3 weeks for clinical signs of leptospirosis.

Results

In these studies no L. grippotyphosa or L. pomona bacteria were isolated from the kidney tissues of the vaccinates while challenge bacteria were isolated in both control groups. This demonstrates the high level of protection provided by the vaccine.

Key Learnings

  • Vaccinates were protected. There was a 90% reduction for L. grippotyphosa and a 96% reduction for L. pomona in days of illness following challenge compared to controls.

  • No Leptospira organisms were isolated in the vaccinates.

  • No vaccinated dogs demonstrated severe signs of leptospirosis. 30% of the non-vaccinated control dogs challenged with L. grippotyphosa and 70% of the non-vaccinated control dogs challenged with L. pomona experienced disease severe enough to warrant euthanasia.
